Embracing Balance: The Key to Resiliency During Study Abroad

Arriving in a different country and committing to a new experience that is completely unfamiliar in its environment and language can be quite jarring. In addition, balancing school and personal life with other student interactions and activities can add more unfamiliarity and pressure. But balancing your personal needs and new cultural experiences doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
Finding your ground
It鈥檚聽important to know your own wants and needs鈥攑hysical and emotional鈥攖o avoid unnecessary聽stress and聽fatigue聽that聽could affect your experience.聽聽



Adapting to聽Argentina鈥攐r聽any foreign environment and culture鈥攂rings聽so many聽opportunities for growth. My partial homestay reminded me that even after being from a different聽culture聽and having multicultural experiences myself, Argentina聽has聽its own culture.聽Learning to embrace聽local聽ways of living聽can help you find聽balance聽as聽you聽adapt to change, determine聽your values,聽and聽consider聽adopting new ones.聽聽
I found that embracing this experience fully can bring wonderful opportunities to strengthen what truly brightens or dims your light.
Respect your personal needs

While there was聽pressure聽to constantly聽partake in all social activities and nightlife,聽I found that solitude聽became聽just as important to gaining聽full immersion. Rather than staying within the confines of the program social circle, immersing yourself聽in聽the local culture聽can聽benefit聽you鈥攕ocially聽and聽academically. Learning from the culture you are living in is an important education that can be easily forgotten when聽your聽comfort is in question.聽聽
Living in Buenos Aires鈥攖he largest city I have ever lived in鈥攕olidified my values and highlighted weaknesses that needed improvement. Though I have never聽deemed聽myself a city girl or desired to聽be聽one, it is an experience I am grateful for. Allowing myself to fully聽experience urban life聽with openness and willingness聽sparked聽new growth and perspectives that I聽wouldn鈥檛聽have gained if I had stuck to聽my old聽mindset.聽聽
If I could share two keys to help you maximize your study experience, they would be:
- Know and understand your values.聽They will聽guide聽you聽during your journey of growth within an聽ever-changing聽environment.聽聽
- Learn directly from the culture you are living in.聽And be curious聽at聽every聽step.聽聽
